letters from boot camp

we heard from stewart -- a page for each of us,  i'll share mine:

mom,
sorry about writing such a brief letter, but there's not a lot going on.  i love you, but the army gives me something you never could, and that's three square meals a day.  i'm joking except for the part about loving you.

i had a chance to call you tonight but i'd only have three minutes and i don't have a phone card, so i figured i'd write my first letter instead.  i don't know when i'll get the chance to mail it, hopefully soon.  don't mail me unless i ask you to, and pass that on to everyone else too, because i could land some push-ups for it.  i also left my phone in the apartment, the chargers around there somewhere.  i didn't hide em though, so they should be easy to spot.  if you guys are planning on coming down for graduation in about nine weeks i'd appreciate it if you'd bring it with you, because i can make phone calls on the weekends during AIT, and then i should be home for a little while.  i miss you mom.    love    stewart

he called the same day the letter arrived and said family day would be the end of aug and graduation the end of september.

flag day -- june 14th

yesterday was flag day, and the day stewart was supposed to report to the recruiting office at 4:00 pm.  he was going to stay at a hotel downtown last night and i don't know where he is today.  i've been looking online and found this site:  http://usmilitary.about.com/od/armyjoin/l/aaarmybasic1.htm

300

we went to see 300 on the big screen recently and i remembered something i'd read back when the movie first came out, and of course it had caught my attention because of the c.s. lewis reference:

Jack Cashill reviews the new movie "300"
http://www.cashill.com/movie_reviews/300.htm
"In pondering the question of whether it was appropriate to present children with frightening images, C.S. Lewis answered:

"Since it is so likely that they will meet cruel enemies, let them at least have heard of brave knights and heroic courage.  Otherwise you are making their destiny not brighter but darker."

Lewis understood something that the political left decidedly does not:  young people, males especially need worthy role models.

A Cat's Diary

Day 183 of my captivity.

My captors continued to taunt me with bizarre little dangling objects. They dine lavishly on fresh meat, while I am forced to eat dry cereal. The only thing that keeps me going is the hope of escape, and the mild satisfaction I get from clawing the furniture. Tomorrow I may eat another house plant.

Today my attempt to kill my captors by weaving around their feet while they were walking almost succeeded. Maybe I should try this at the top of the stairs.

In an attempt to disgust and repulse these vile oppressors, I once again induced myself to vomit on their favorite chair. I must try this on their bed.

Decapitated a mouse and brought them the headless body in an attempt to make them aware of what I am capable of, and to try to strike fear into their hearts. They only cooed and condescended about what a good little kitty cat I was. This is not working according to plan.

There was some sort of gathering of their accomplices. I was placed in solitary confinement throughout the event. However, I could hear the noise and smell the food. More important, I overheard that my confinement was due to my powers of inducing something called "allergies." Must learn what this is and how to use it to my advantage.

I am convinced the other captives are flunkies and maybe snitches. The dog is routinely released and seems more than happy to return. He is obviously a half-wit.

The bird, on the other hand, has got to be an informant. He speaks with them regularly, and I am certain he reports my every move. Due to his current placement in the metal room, his safety is assured. But I can wait.

It's only a matter of time.

-- maybe sometime i'll post something original.
